iDEAL is an account-to-account (A2A) payment method based on the SEPA Credit Transfer standard, functioning as a real-time bank transfer system within the Netherlands. It operates by redirecting the consumer from the merchant checkout to their personal online banking environment via the iDEAL gateway.

The method allows for immediate authorisation of funds, which reduces the credit risk typically associated with card-based payments. As a push-based payment system, iDEAL does not support traditional chargebacks, though refund capabilities are built into the protocol.

For merchants, it sits alongside card processing as a critical alternative payment method (APM) for capturing the Dutch market, where it maintains more than half of all e-commerce transaction volume.

  1. Method selection at checkout

    The customer chooses iDEAL from the list of available payment methods and selects their specific bank from a dropdown list.

    This list is dynamically populated through an API call to ensure all active participating issuers are represented, including major Dutch retail banks and neobanks operating within the region.

  2. Redirect to banking portal

    The merchant gateway redirects the consumer to their bank's authenticated environment. This transition is handled via a secure URL, often utilising a QR code for mobile banking app handoff.

    The transaction details, including Amount and Merchant Category Code (MCC) information, are pre-filled to prevent input errors by the payer.

  3. Authentication and authorisation

    The user authorises the transfer using multi-factor authentication, such as biometric data or a hardware token, satisfying Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements under PSD2.

    The bank verifies the availability of funds and provides an immediate authorisation response to the payment service provider, confirming that the payment is guaranteed.

  4. Notification and status update

    Upon successful authorisation, the bank sends a real-time notification to the PSP. The customer is redirected back to the merchant's success page.

    The status of the transaction is updated in the merchant's dashboard, moving from pending to authorised, allowing for immediate order fulfilment and subsequent settlement.

What is the role of the Issuer and the Acquirer in an iDEAL transaction?
