Address Verification Service

Also: AVS

An issuer service that compares the billing address submitted with a transaction against the cardholder's address on file.

The Address Verification Service (AVS) is a fraud prevention measure that verifies the numeric portions of a cardholder’s billing address, such as the house number and postcode, against the data held by the issuing bank. When a merchant submits an authorisation request, the card schemes (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) facilitate the transmission of an AVS result code alongside the transaction response. This code indicates whether there is a full match, a partial match, or a mismatch. While AVS is a standard tool in the UK, USA, and Canada, it is less common in other regions, meaning many international issuers will return a code indicating the service is not supported. Acquirers often recommend using AVS in conjunction with 3D Secure (SCA) to provide multiple layers of verification. Merchants can configure their payment gateway to automatically decline transactions that fail AVS checks, though many choose to manually review partial matches to avoid false positives and lost sales.

Frequently asked

Does a negative AVS result automatically decline the transaction?

Not necessarily. The AVS result is an informative code sent by the issuer; it is typically the merchant’s payment gateway or risk engine that decides whether to block the payment based on that code. Many merchants allow transactions with partial postcode matches while blocking those with complete address mismatches.

Can AVS alone protect against chargebacks?

AVS provides limited protection and does not offer a liability shift like 3D Secure does. While a positive AVS match can help a merchant win a 'civilian' dispute regarding card-not-present fraud, it is often considered a weak signal on its own because billing data can be easily obtained or social engineered by fraudsters.
