What is Step-up authentication?
Elevating a transaction from frictionless to a challenge when the issuer's risk engine, the acquirer, or SCA rules require an extra factor.
Step-up authentication is the process by which an issuer, in response to a transaction submitted for authorisation, requests additional cardholder verification beyond the initial data provided.
This typically occurs when the issuer's risk engine identifies a potential anomaly, or when the transaction falls within the scope of Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) regulations and has not been exempted.
The acquirer's 3D Secure (3DS) message fields, specifically the `transStatus` (transaction status) and `challengeInd` (challenge indicator) fields, convey the issuer's decision to the merchant, indicating whether a challenge is required.
For a merchant, step-up authentication means their payment gateway will redirect the cardholder to the issuer's 3DS page to complete a challenge, such as entering a one-time passcode or approving the transaction via their banking app.
Merchants will observe this redirection in their payment flow, and the subsequent `transStatus` value in the 3DS response will confirm the outcome of the challenge.
A common mistake arises when merchants fail to implement appropriate error handling for failed challenges, which can lead to legitimate transactions being declined and a poor customer experience.

A merchant reviews a €240 transaction where Step-up authentication is the deciding factor. The Checkout submits device and transaction data, the issuer risk engine decides whether to challenge the customer, and the authentication result is passed into the authorisation request.
